Remember the structure before the detail

Each section starts by letting Jan and Mark report a new development, then moves into the group’s world. That repeated pattern helps the audience compare how the teenagers behave as the cover-up deepens.

The group thinks Adam is dead

Jan and Mark reveal that a bullying incident has ended with Adam falling through a grille into a deep shaft. John Tate tries to keep control, but panic exposes how fragile his authority is. Phil, who has mostly stayed silent, takes over when he produces a detailed plan to frame a fictional stranger.

Performance turn: the group moves from noisy panic to listening to Phil. That status change should be visible before anyone explains it.

The lie starts hurting someone outside the group

The invented suspect becomes real when an innocent postman is linked to the case. Brian is expected to identify him and refuses. Phil forces him into the plan by threatening him, so the cover-up now depends on deliberately sacrificing another person.

Performance turn: Brian’s resistance gives the scene a body. His shrinking space, hesitation and fear can make the audience feel the pressure of the group.

Adam is alive

The group discovers that Adam survived. He is injured, confused and does not simply return home. His reappearance could expose everything. Phil responds by treating Adam as another problem to remove, and Leah can no longer accept the logic that has held the group together.

Performance turn: Adam’s vulnerability changes the moral temperature of the play. The group now faces a living person rather than an imagined consequence.

The group continues, but it has changed

Leah has left. Richard tells Phil what has happened to the others, including the shifts in the group beyond the stage. Phil is quieter and no longer eating. The ending does not restore the old order; it leaves the audience with the cost of everything the group chose to protect.

Performance turn: use the ending’s reduced action and silence. A smaller stage picture can feel more unsettling than another burst of violence.
