The Examiner's Trap: The “Disney Castle”

Don’t design a literal, realistic stone castle. Examiners reward symbolic set design that communicates meaning. Inverness should feel like a psychological cage. Use levels (rostra/platforms) to show shifting status and power, and choose harsh materials or shapes that reflect paranoia and tyranny.

TRAPDOOR (HELL) JACOBEAN THRUST STAGE CONCRETE ROSTRA & HARSH ANGLES BARREN WASTELAND & THICK FOG

Traditional Jacobean

Design a historically accurate thrust stage made of heavy, dark oak. The crucial element is the downstage trapdoor. In Jacobean theatre, the space beneath the stage represented “Hell”. Having the Witches rise from this trapdoor physically marks them as demonic, instantly unsettling the audience.
